What is it? Swann v Charlotte-Mecklenburg was a Court decision the Supreme Court unanimously upheld in which busing programs were formed to speed up the racial integration of public schools. Busing was commonly used by white officials as a way to maintain segregation. The National Association of Colored People sued the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District on behalf of Vera and Darius Swann to allow their son to attend Seversille Elementary School, a school closest to their home. The Federal district judge James McMillan, ruled in favor of the Swanns and also oversaw the implementation of a busing strategy designed to speed up the process of racial integration in public schools. The case was appealed to the Supreme Court who upheld the decision.
