World War I was the first global war, originating from Europe in July 1914 until November 1918. It was known as the Great War, it involved many nations. There is no one clear reason that the war started, but there were many factors. Militarism (building up armies and the temptation to use them), alliances (tension), Imperialism (jealous of each other's colonial holding), and Nationalism (for the first time, nationalism came to the forefront) all contributed to WWI. The short term cause of the war was the assassination of Franz Ferdinand of the Austro-Hungarian empire. The two sides to the war were the Central Powers and the Allies. The Central Powers consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungry, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria. The Allies were made up of Russia, France, Great Britain, and the United States. Italy joined the Allies later in the war, as well as Japan who took this as an opportunity to become a western colonizing power. On November 11, 1918, Germany surrender, and all nations agreed to cease fighting. Germany and the allied nations signed the treaty of Versailles which officially ended the war.
