Robert H. Waters was a 1946 graduate of Sumner High School. He graduated from Northwestern University and received his Law Degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Waters was employed by the Social Security Administration Office in Kansas City, Missouri while attending law school on a part-time basis.
Later on, Waters served as president of the NAACP's Kansas City, Kansas branch for approximately four years before moving to Miami, Florida. He served as a law professor at Miami University School of Law for many years. In 2002, the summer institute for law students at Miami University was later named the James Weldon Johnson/Robert H. Waters Summer Institute for his dedication to serving others. Waters continued to maintain a residence in Kansas City, Kansas, until his death. He was the great-grandson of Corvine Patterson.
