Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed on Wednesday that any COVID-19 vaccine approved by Health Canada would be freely available to all Canadians.

Answering a question from New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh during a session in the House of Commons, the prime minister said that future vaccines would be available at no cost through Canada’s universal health care system.

“We deeply cherish our universal health care system, and that means things like life-saving vaccines are free for Canadians,” he said. (Global Citizen)

Canada approved the Covid-19 vaccine from Pfizer Inc and BioNTech on Wednesday, clearing the way for shots to be delivered and administered across the country.

The nation’s first coronavirus vaccine green light comes under a new interim order system that allows for accelerated approval.

“The approval of the vaccine is supported by evidence that it is safe, effective and of good quality,” the health ministry said in a statement.

The vaccine has initially been authorised for use in people 16 years of age or older. (Dawn)
