While John Quincy Adams wins the election it was not an easy win, as Andrew Jackson was his competitor. While had Jackson won the popular and electoral vote, he failed to gain the majority, thus the vote going to the House of Representatives. In the House, JQA had won the vote. This began the rumor of a "Corrupt Bargain" wherein JQA met with Henry Clay privately and asked Clay for votes if he gave him the Secretary of State position.
Importance—The idea of corruption in government begins as Jacksonians begin to doubt the election results.
Connection—In this election, no candidate had been assigned a political party as a result of the Era of Good Feelings wherein the Federalist party collapsed and the Democratic-Republicans began to falter as they no longer had a political rival.
