Located at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea in present-day Turkey, the ancient Greek city of Byzantium was reestablished as Nova Roma, or New Rome, on May 11, 330 by Emperor Constantine I, who proclaimed it the new capital of the Roman Empire. The name Nova Roma was not widely used, however, and the city was renamed Constantinople after the emperor's death in 337. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476, Constantinople remained the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, which became known as the Byzantine Empire.
