In 1855 Missouri senator David R. Atchison encouraged residents of his state to cross into Kansas to vote in elections to promote slavery in the territory, and the competition opposed this and both sides ended in violence which split the two parties even farther apart. The violence helped the progression of America into a Civil war because the conflicts were driving people to more and more irrational actions driving Americans agianst each other.
