Composer: Weelkes
This madrigal was Weelkes’s contribution to the Triumphs of Oriana. It has a potential double meanings for how political figures corresponded to the characters in the madrigal. Oriana could mean Queen Elizabeth, but she was unmarried (unlike Oriana) and had no direct heirs. It could have originally meant Anna of Denmark, wife of James VI, king of Scotland. As the Earl of Essex had recently attempted to revolt, Thomas Morley (the publisher of the compilation of madrigals) avoided any hint of treason by recasting his madrigal collection so that it could be read as a tribute to Elizabeth.
Though late in the period of madrigal compositions, it was still primarily intended for amateurs to sing at home.
