Maryland passed the Act of Toleration in 1649, which granted the freedom of worship to all Christian denominations. **Maryland was a Southern Colony founded by Lord Baltimore because he wanted to create a safe haven for Catholics and tobacco profit.** Many other southern colonies like North Carolina were also founded on the basis of tobacco land. Middle colonies like Pennsylvania were created as a refuge for Quakers and other denominations of Christianity. New England colonies were founded because of religious tensions in England.
