STS-107, which was riding on Space Shuttle Columbia, had flown a normal and successful mission in Space. But that would change 16 minutes before touchdown, when the Shuttle suddenly disintegrated. This time, it was due to an opening in the heat shield that had occurred during liftoff when a piece of foam from the external tank hit the left wing of the spacecraft. It is possible that the damage was already known by NASA, but it was determined that even if it was announced, there was no way to fix the problem. Aboard STS-107 was Ilan Ramon, the first and only Israeli astronaut. On the Shuttle, Ramon kept kosher and observed Shabbat.
