U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and members of the Democratic and Republican parties held a special press conference to express support for the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act. Pelosi pointed out that the people of Hong Kong were fighting for the freedom they deserved and that Beijing should fulfill its promise to grant universal suffrage to the people of Hong Kong, and stressed that the U.S. should not let business interests override its Chinese policy.
