In 1776, the American colonists realized that Britain was slowly taking more of their freedom away from them. They declared independence because they wanted to protect their rights and their liberty. America declaring independence was significant BECAUSE it gave sole power to the American government to be able to govern their own country with their own rights without being under British control.
