This happened during the Vietnam war when the North Vietnam attacked South Vietnam by surprise and which was tremendously the turning point for the war. It was decidedly an allied victory but was a total disaster for all of the Vietnam and also US as US soldiers were dead in thousands and was the first ever unpopular war for US as they eventually lost.
