The English mission was established seven years after the organization of the church and was the first mission outside of the United States. Joseph Smith called Herbert C. Kimball, Orson Hyde, and five other missionaries to go to Great Britain to preach the gospel. They felt impressed to preach in the city of Preston, and within the first ten days of their mission, the first nine English converts were baptized in the Ripple river. A week later, fifty more people were baptized. Despite opposition from opposing churches, the missionaries continued to preach, and by the end of their mission they had baptized between 1,500-2,000 people.
