On the first of Tuesday January 1901, Governor General, Sir Lord Hopeton (Queen Victoria's representative) declared that Australia was now a nation. This made Edmund Barton our first Prime Minister.After years of debating through the six colonies (NSW, Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania and Queensland) they finally decided that all the pros of federation outweighed all the cons.
