On the 12th of February 1851, Edward Hargraves discovered flecks of gold in a waterhole near Bathurst. After Hargraves found gold, even more gold was found and heaps of people rushed to Bathurst to find gold as well. This affected the population and people's lives. Many miners were becoming rich quickly. This event made the Gold Rush and changed the country's identity.

This changed Australia by boosting its economy, population and its identity. It also changed how people treated different races back then. Chinese people were discriminated and they lived in poor quality houses. They had to walk from Ballarat to South Australia just because they were different and they couldn't pay the money. Aboriginal Australians were discriminated and had to work for the British. This shows that people with different races were treated unequally and they had to work hard to get success.
