Jamestown
The first permanent English settlement in North America was established along the James River in 1607. The Jamestown colony was a corporate colony created by the Virginia Company of London in hopes that gold would be found in the Americas. Thanks to the botanical discoveries of John Rolfe, tobacco eventually became the primary cash crop of Jamestown and the Virginia and Maryland colonies that followed. the populations of these colonies rapidly expanded as indentured servants immigrated to the Chesapeake.
