The battle takes place either in Juin or September 451 at Cenabum. It opposed the forces of the Roman Flavius Aetius with those of Attila the Hun. On both sides, the heavy presence of germanic barbarians can be observed, in both armies they make up the bulk of the fighting force.

Francs, Sarmatians, Alans, Burgundians, Visigoths and more allied themselves with the great Roman general while the Gepids and the Ostrogoth fought for Attila.

This battle resulted in a Roman victory and sent Attila's forces fleeing in disarray. The king of the Visigoth, Theodoric was killed to the satisfaction of Aetius who feared the growing power of the barbarians just as much as he had feared defeat.

A certain Merovech is also present at this battle. He is in fact the adopted son of Aetius. After the death of his father Chlodio, Merovech and his brother Clodoald fought over their inheritance. Merovech sought the aid of Aetius while his brother went to seek it from the fearsome Attila the Hun. It isn't known what happened to Clodoald but what is sure is that Merovech won in the end.

Although the victory was Roman, the fact that most of the generals and soldier were Germanic Foederati announces, in retrospect, the new world order that would come about after the fall of Rome.
