2 янв 1952 г. - Christine Weems Northern

Описание:

On November 23, 1952, Christine Weems married Emanuel Northern. That same year, she became the first African-American woman to graduate from the Kansas University School of Nursing. While mothering four children, Northern studied and worked hard to set a good example for them. She and Emanuel wholeheartedly believed in the importance of education and helping others, being active members of Allen Chapel A.M.E Church. They were well-respected throughout the Quindaro and Kansas City, Kansas community.

Northern pursued a nursing career that would open the door for new opportunities, allowing her to teach at regional hospitals for years to come, including being a nursing instructor at KU Medical Center.

During the 1960s, Northern was the health and education planner for the Model Cities Program, aiding with establishing a 100-bed nursing home named the Bryant Butler Kitchen Nursing Home, located in Quindaro.

Northern also was once the Division Director for the Office of Civil Rights, Higher Education Division. In this position, she supervised complaints under the Civil Rights Act.

Northern was one of the Douglass Community Health Center founding members, now named Swope Parkway Health Centers. Her other interest included serving on the Wyandotte County Health Department board and the local Girl Scouts board. She died on January 20, 2009.
