An uprising organised by Ignacy Potocki and Hugo Kołłątaj after the second partition of Poland, under the leadership of general Tadeusz Kościuszko.

- Planned for November, but the conspiracy was threatened, so it broke out in March, beginning in Kraków, with Kościuszko wanting to get to Warsaw.

Notable events:
- Battle of Racławice (April): peasants with scythes involved. The event had great importance for awakening national identity in Polish peasantry.
- Kościuszko announces a series of proclamations (e.g. of Połaniec) introducing new rights for the nation. However, the nobles weren't too happy about what they saw as limitations of their rights in favour of other states. Kościuszko had to negotiate compromises which in the end satisfied neither the nobles nor the rest, resulting in stunted growth of support for the insurection.
- Local uprisings in Warsaw, Vilnus and other cities
- Prussia sides with Russia and launches an attach (May)
- Battle of Szczekociny (June): againsr Russo-Prussian forces; a defeat for the insurgents
- Cracow surrenders (June). The insurgents concentrate in and around Warsaw.
- Battle of Maciejowice (October): a failed attempt to prevent two Russian armies from joining forces. Kościuszko captured. Morale plummets.
- Battle of Praga (November): Russians murder all civilians of Warsaw's Praga district
- The uprising falls
