Описание:

Fernando J. Gaitan, Jr. graduated from Sumner High School in 1966. On January 22, 2007, he became the Chief Judge for the Western District of Missouri. The geographical boundaries include the western half of the State. Additionally, as Chief Judge by designation, his jurisdiction includes the State of Kansas. Judge Gaitan was the first African American to hold this position in Western Missouri. He graduated from Pittsburg State University in 1970, and the University of Missouri at Kansas City (J.D. 1974). Gaitan served as a member of the Federal-State Jurisdiction Committee of the U.S. Judicial Conference from 1997 to 2003. He served as a transferee judge by the appointment of the Multidistrict Litigation Panel. Before his appointment to the federal bench, Gaitan served as an appellate judge of the Missouri court of Appeals-Western District (1986-91) and a State Trial Judge for the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit of Kansas City, Missouri (1980-86).

He was listed by Lawdragon, a national legal magazine, as one of the 500 leading judges in America.

Fernando Gaitan, Jr: 2008 Reasons to Believe Honoree: At 32 years of age, he was one of the youngest individuals named to a judicial position. It was 1991 when Fernando Gaitan was appointed United States District Judge for the Western District of Missouri. Today, he is chief judge and also serves as a member of the Eighth Circuit Judicial Council.

“I do what I do with great pride, great passion and great love. I get up every morning looking forward to the day because it’s always something different and new, and I want to do something positive,” he said.

Law was not Gaitan’s passion when he was growing up. In fact, his only exposure to the field was through his work cleaning the offices of a small law firm twice a week while he was a student at Sumner High School. His interests included basketball and the school choir. The support of his parents enabled him to succeed in school.

“I come from humble and hardworking people who believe in education,” Gaitan said. “They emphasized education to me and they supported me emotionally.”
