Before and during
- Italy joined the Entente Alliance In order to gain Italian speaking provinces of Austria as a reward

- The left was divided: viewed the war as imperialist and disowned it, or supported the war in hope that it destroys liberal Italy (Mussolini believed this)

- PSI and trade union membership increased during the war and became more militant

After

- Italy suffered large losses which made the people dislike the liberal government

- Liberals were unpopular but no new coherent government was able to be formed

- Not all territories promised by the Treaty of London were given. This angered the people as they believed the war was pointless

- Facist party, Catholic party, and PSI gained in votes and membership

- High inflation and unemployment
