Islam was started by the prophet Mohammed. Islam was the dominant religion throughout the Middle East, Northern Africa, and parts of Asia. Mecca is the holy city of Islam, and the Hajj pilgrimage caused many people to travel to Mecca. This influx of people increased trade and formed trade routes.
