In July 1979, the publication Healthy People: The Surgeon General's Report on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention described for the first time a national public health agenda. This report established five quantifiable goals for improving the health of all Americans and documented the importance of disease prevention and health promotion in achieving these goals.
