Saddam used terror to maintain control of the people. He went on "purges" where he would execute members of the Baath Party who he thought were a potential threat.
He also carried out "Show Trials" which were televised trials where people would admit to crimes they allegedly committed.
If a member of the Baath party joined another party, they faced the death penalty.
