Acute effects of radiation sickness were first discovered in 1896 when Nikola Telsa suffered burns on his fingers when he purposely exposed them to X-rays. Major effects of radiation sickness were not discovered until Hermann Joseph discovered genetic effects and increased cancer risks. Many deaths were caused to poor understanding of radiation and many people died from ingesting large amounts of radiation over the course of many years. Radition sickness is vital to know as when doesn radiotherepy it should be sure that the patient isnt bing over exposed to radiaiotn and that only enough radiaiotn is utilisted to kill the infected cells.
