Denmark Vesey was a black carpenter slave who planned the most extensive slave revolt in U.S. history in 1822 after buying his freedom with $600 that he won in the lottery. Having read anti-slavery literature, Vesey are dissatisfied with his second-class status and decided he wanted to help relieve the suppressive conditions of the slaves he knew. He then began planning an uprising of both city and plantations blacks, which reportedly** called for the revolters to attack guardhouses and arsenals, seize their arms, kill all whites, burn and destroy the city, and free the slaves. However, testimony about the plans for the uprising from Vesey himself cannot be found. Therefore, historians question the accuracy of the events as they are forced to rely on the testimonies of people who knew him, causing modern-day scholars to doubt whether a detailed plan for such a rebellion even existed. Even so, some 130 blacks were arrested after the authorities were tipped off by a house servant. In the following trials, 67 were convicted of trying to raise an insurrection. Of these, 32 were condemned to exile and 35, including Vesey, were hanged.
