The unpopular president Batista was overthrown. Many Cubans disliked him because he exploited them and ran Cuba for America's benefit.
Fidel Castro took over promising to get rid of opponents and remove America's influence. The US feared that Castro would end up being communist.
Castro negotiated trade agreements with the Soviet Union to get military equipment. This greatly worried the US as it was the height of the Cold war and there was fierce rivalry between the US and the Soviet Union.
