The American colonization society was founded in 1817 by antislavery reformers in effort to combat against the racism and prejudice against former slaves which was infiltrated in the U.S due to its previous prominent slave culture. Its purpose became transporting African Americans back to Africa, which essentially all slaves. It became evident most blacks opposed to returning to their ancestral land due to the fact they considered themselves as partially Americanized. So in 1822, the ACS established an area in Africa for these African Americans, known as Liberia. This transition or "compromise", became historically significant as the U.S turned towards change as the ACS attempted to provide this idea of freedom from the racist America. Also it proves that although people wanted to abolish slavery, they didn't want black people living among them but instead sent them away. Ultimately, this colonization did not work out and barely lasted. Consequently, it inflicted tensions between the North and South due to their division in sentiments regarding the presence of enslavement in the nation.
