A New Republic
In 1949, the Communists, lead by Mao Zedong, drove the Nationalists out of China.
The Nationalists and their leader fled to Taiwan, where they set up their new government.
On the mainland, the Communists formed the People’s Republic of China. About 1 million people were killed during the takeover.
The United States refused to recognize the new government of China because they had supported the Nationalists.
