He did not completely rule out a sense of literal interpretation.
He claimed that most meaningful aspects of divine revelation could be extracted only by allegorization.
Origen suggested that the Bible should be interpreted in three ways, morally, allegorically and literally.
if biblical passages are only interpreted in the literal sense then they are often impossible or nonsensical. They all must be interpreted morally and allegorically to be understood.
