In 1956, Stalin died and Khrushchev took his place. Both the Soviet Union and US were strained, fighting to gain the upper hand. They were matched weapon to weapon. In 1960, an American submarine launched an atomic-tipped Polaris missile, causing the Soviets to race to do the same. Both nations were racing to have the best, creating tension.
