Iranian rebels, led by Ayatolla Khomeini, were so angry at the US for allowing the exiled Shah of Iran, Pahlavi, into the US, that they attacked the US embassy in Iran, kidnapping 53 Americans. The hostages were not released until January 20, 1981, exactly 444 days after their initial kidnapping.
