Issa Rae is the creator, lead actress, and head writer for her show Insecure, broadcasted by HBO. After a successful first season, Insecure’s second season recently ended in August 2017. Insecure features the life of a young black woman living in LA. Issa, the protagonist, works at as a social worker, and navigates life as a young person trying to get by while also being somewhat insecure. Issa, herself, enjoys rapping for fun and loves hip-hop music. Within the show, Issa Rae includes lyrics from her favorite artists, like Drake and Frank Ocean. In “Hella Open,” (S2E3) Issa’s character tells someone, “I’ve gotta tell you how much I vibe with you,” which is a directly quoted lyric from Frank Oceans, “Solo,” which is a part of Blonde. Insecure is one of my favorite shows, and every week that I watched, I would recognize lyrics within dialogues on the show. This lyric was the first that I noticed.
