The Mohawks released “The Champ,” in 1968. It is a Funk/Soul song. “The Champ,” has no lyrics whatsoever, it is an instrumental track. The first time that it was released, the song was no great success. It was rereleased in 1987, and performed more strongly, however, the song has been in a great success in other ways. “The Champ,” has been sampled in hundreds of songs. Most of the songs that have utilized “The Champ” as a sample have been hip-hop songs, however, other genres also utilized the song as well. Frank Ocean’s “Nikes,” a track on Blonde, is one of the songs that used The Mohawk’s song as a sample.
