Azana replaced Niceto Alcala Zamora as prime minister and started to introduce new reforms for Spain and to make his mark as prime minister. However the senior military officers were not fond of the new reforms and wanted older ones that were more stable. Azana believed that the Catholic church was the center of the problems of Spain. Azana was critized by catholics by not doing anything when the convents were burned in 1931.
