The Catalan Statute was passed in September 1932, and allowed Catalonia a large amount of autonomy. They were now allowed to make their own choices about education and taxation. Catalonia had previously been treated very poorly under Primo De Rivera, and Catalonian separatists had won by a landslide in the 1931 election. Catalonia declared a state of republic after this. In addition, the Basqure region saw the Catalonian victory and demanded that they be granted similar rights. This angered right wing politicians, the elite, and the army because they saw it as a threat to national unity. These groups wanted the country to be “united” because that way, there would be less overall opposition to the state.
