The Spanish grew tired of the dictatorship. The economic condition of the country worsened as the value of the peseta fell against foreign currencies, 1929 brought a bad harvest, and Spain's imports outweighed their exports. By the 1930's, the international economic slump had reached Spain. Conservatives blamed inflation on government spending of public works projects. As Primo de Rivera's support from conservatives dwindled, support from the king and the military dwindled, as well. When Primo de Rivera began to inject politics into promotions for the artillery corps, it provoked hostility and opposition from the armed forces. King Alfonso, who had sponsored the establishment of Madrid's University City, watched as the students began to protest the dictatorship and the Kings support for it, which decreased Primo de Rivera's support from the monarchy. As he no longer had support the military or the monarchy, he resigned on January 28 and died of fever and diabetes in Paris that March. Primo de Rivera's resignation, ultimately, led to the fall of the dictatorship and republican support grew in urban centers.
