King Alfonso tried to return Spain to a constitutional being after Primo De Rivera resigned by avoiding elections as they could drastically change things in the government. He was overpowered influenced by other and finally agreed to hold elections in the major cities. The elections turned out to have a lot of republican and socialist victors which started the Spanish Republic and lead them to demand for the Kings abdication. He then was forced to leave Spain and abdicated later to his son.
