23 авг 1939 г. - German-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact

Описание:

Shortly before World War II broke out in Europe, Germany and the Soviet Union signed the German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact. This pact stated that the two countries agreed to not engage in any conflict with each other for the next 10 years. The German-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact fell apart in June 1941, when the Nazi forces invaded the Soviet Union.

Causes
1. The Soviet Union was looking for protection and security from Britain and France. The three countries could not come to an agreement, so the Soviet Union had to look elsewhere. Germany promised the Soviet Union peace and protection and the two countries signed the pact.
2. Hitler wanted to invade his neighbour Poland and he knew that the Soviet Union would not stand back and let him do so easily. Hitler agreed to the act with the Soviet Union because they could not oppose him when he eventually invaded Poland.

Effects
1. After signing the German-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact, the Soviet Union was now on peaceful terms with Germany. By now, most of Europe knew that they could not trust Hitler’s word, so the Soviet’s spent this peaceful time building up their military, getting ready to fight.
2. Now that the Soviet Union and Germany were “allies” it also meant that the Soviet Union and Japan were also “allies”. So, instead of attacking each other, Japan and the Soviet Union began attacking the United States and Great Britain.
