The Women’s National Basketball Association was founded in 1996. In the league's first season in 1997, there were only 8 teams but that has grown to 12 in the present day. This league is the most successful Women’s professional basketball league ever with an average of 8 000 fans per game. This influenced basketball massively as it gave a stage to the female players to showcase their talent. This also inspired many other young females to start playing basketball. This helped decrease the gender gap in the world of basketball.
