The Declaration of Independence is a document that announced the separation of the North American British colonies from the British Empire, declaring themselves a Free country. The Declaration was signed by 56 men in the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776 and explained why the Congress had unanimously, by the votes of 12 colonies (with New York abstaining), decided that “these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be Free and Independent States.”
