- Spanish fleet carrying the new Spanish viceroy arrives at the island but allows Hawkins to take control to carry out necessary repairs
- Hawkins and the fleet surprise attacked by the Spanish
- Drake and Hawkins managed to escape
- Drake ignored orders to come alongside and take some of the men from the overloaded Minion
- Drake and Hawkins eventually returned to Britain
- Drake, in good health, was dispatched to London to report the losses of the voyage
- Drake attempted to claim these losses against the complaints of the Spanish
- Historian Herrera claims Drake himself brought home the treasure, then tried to hide it from the authorities, and was gaoled for three months as a result
