A clash between a Philippine patrol vessel and six Vietnamese fishing boats within Philippine’s EEZ has led to the deaths of two Vietnamese fishermen. The Philippine patrol boat BRP Miguel Malvar (PS-19) was on its way to Subic Bay when it spotted the fishing vessels illegally fishing within Philippine waters. As the navy vessel approached the boats, one began to flee, prompting a chase. In the pursuit, the Vietnamese vessel PY 96173 TS slammed into the left side of the Philippine patrol vessel, prompting the Miguel Malvar to respond with warning shots. After boarding the fishing boats, officials discovered two Vietnamese dead and arresting five others. The Vietnamese government demanded the Philippine government conduct a thorough and fair investigation into the deaths and requested punishment of any wrongdoings that were committed during the incident. After an investigation, it was found that the two Vietnamese fishermen had gunshot wounds on their bodies, though officials did not confirm the cause of said wounds. Despite the nature of the incident, the Philippines assured Vietnam that the detained fishermen would be well treated. Two months later, the five fishermen were released personally by President Duterte, who apologized to them during a ceremonial send-off, and stated that the incident ‘will not destroy our bond of relationship [as] it’s very strong’.
