Vietnam’s foreign ministry stated that in the afternoon of August 7, the Haiyang Dizhi 8 survey vessel stopped its survey activities and left Vietnam’s southeastern continental shelf, where it had been since July 3. According to the Centre for Advanced Defence Studies, the vessel had left Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone, though its coastguard escorts remained in the area, and now appeared to be loitering just outside Vietnam’s waters. This comes as Vietnam, in an act of seeming defiance, extended the work schedule of one of its oil rigs, which drew the ire of Beijing. Meanwhile, China recently held a military training exercise near the Paracel Islands claimed by Vietnam, which the Vietnamese foreign ministry deemed to have violated its sovereignty. It has also been suggested that the Haiyang Dizhi 8, which is currently as Fiery Cross Reef, is just stopping to refuel, meaning that it could soon return to Vanguard Bank.'
