- King's flight to Varennes caused republic sentiment, protests and petitions in Paris
- The Cordeliers club and the Jacobins club drafted petitions calling for the depositions of the King and urged Parisians to sign them
- Fearing this gathering would turn insurrectionary, the mayor of Paris called in the National Guard to stem the crowds. Their arrival caused confrontation, gunfire. injuries and deaths
- The massacre increased radicalism in Paris. A split in the Jacobin club, caused many Parisians to lose faith in the Assembly and Commune.
