The Wilmot Proviso was created in order to eliminate all slavery in lands acquired within the Mexican American. As with other land acquisitions, it would unset the balance so there was always controversy regarding it. Even though this did not pass, it still caused sectionalism. It created more disagreements between the North and South and caused anger tensions to build-up as well.
