A political scandal during Reagan's presidency. Government officials facilitated the sale of arms to Iran during a weapons embargo of the country. The funds raised be selling arms illegally would be used to fund the Contras, which Congress had already prohibited more funding of. This is important because it adds the the atmosphere of distrust between the government and it's citizens. Political scandals undermine the trust of the people.
