The NPT is an international treaty with the objective of preventing the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology, as well as promote the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and further the goal of disarming nuclear weapons. This was negotiated by the Eighteen Nation Committee on Disarmament in Geneva, Switzerland, and was an indication of reduced tensions.
