The Spanish Armada was the largest blockade in naval history. When Spain needed to send a blockade to protect their troops while they crossed the English Channel to invade England, they created the Spanish Armada. The English privateer Francis Drake set five ships on fire and rigged them to sail straight into the Armada. When the ships approached the Spanish cut their anchor lines to escape. They couldn't turn around so they were blown around the whole of the English islands, with over two thirds of the men perishing on the way. With their fleet destroyed the Spanish started to fall into bankruptcy because they had spent nearly all of their money on building the Armada.
